Remove/Install.
To remove and install the same item when required to
perform service or other maintenance functions. Install may be the act
of emplacing, seating, or fixing into position a spare, repair part, or
module (component or assembly) in a manner to allow the proper func-
tioning of an equipment or system.
Replace.

Replace
is authorized by the MAC and is
shown as the 3d position code of the SMR code.
Repair.
The application of maintenance services1, including fault loca-
t i o n t r o u b l e s h o o t i ng2, r e m o v a l / i n s t a l l a t i o n , a n d d i s a s s e m b l y / a s s e m b ly3
procedures,
a n d m a i n t e n a n c e a c t i o ns4 t o i d e n t i f y t r o u b l e s a n d r e s t o re
s e r v i c e a b i l i t y t o a n i t e m b y c o r r e c t i n g s p e c i f i c d a m a g e , f a u l t , m a l-
f u n c t i o n,
o r f a i l u r e i n a p a r t , s u b a s s e m b l y,
module (component or
assembly), end item or system.
Overhaul.
That maintenance effort (service/action) prescribed to restore
an item to a completely serviceable/operational condition as required by
maintenance standards in appropriate technical publications (i.e., DMWR).
Overhaul is normally the highest degree of maintenance performed by the
Army.
Overhaul does not normally return an item to like new condition.
Rebuild.
C o n s i s t s o f t h o s e s e r v i c e s / a c t i o n s n e c e s s a r y f o r t h e r e s t o-
ration of unserviceable equipment to a like new condition in accordance
with original manufacturing standards.
Rebuild is the highest degree of
material maintenance applied to Army equipment.
The rebuild operation
includes
the
act
of
returning
t o z e r o
those
age
measurements
(hours/miles, etc. ) considered in classifying Army equipment/components.

cause of equipment malfunctioning; the act of isolating a fault within a system or

encompasses the step-by-step taking apart (or break-
down) or a spare/functional group coded item to the level of its least componency
identified as maintenance significant (i.e., assigned an SMR code) for the category
of maintenance under consideration.
4Actions -
w e l d i n g , g r i n d i n g , r i v e t i n g , s t r a i g h t e n i n g , f a c i n g , r e m a c h i n e r y,
and/or resurfacing.
