Remove brakeshoes (12 and 23) from backing plate (5).
6.
Remove and discard two washers (10) and springs (9) from guide pins (8).
7.
Remove and discard two nuts (2), Iockwashers (3), and guide pins (8) from backing plate (5).

Remove two nuts (26), Iockwashers (25), and shoulder pins (17) from backing plate (5). Discard Iockwashers.
9.
Remove two cotter pins (11) and shoulder pins (14) from adjusting cams (7). Remove two adjusting cams,
springs (6), and shoulder pins (4) from backing plate (5), Discard cotter pins.
10.
Remove ten locknuts (27), screws (24), and backing plate (5) from axle (1). Discard locknuts.
b. CLEANING AND INSPECTION
1.
Clean
WARNING
DO NOT handle brakeshoes, brakedrums, or other brake components unless area
has been properly cleaned. There may be asbestos dust on these components which
can be dangerous if you touch It or breathe it. Wear an approved filter mask and
gloves. Never use compressed air or a dry brush to clean brake components. Dust
may be removed using an Industrial-type vacuum cleaner. Clean dust or mud away
from brake components with water and a wet, soft brush or cloth. Failure to follow
this warning may result in serious illness or death to personnel.
Dry cleaning solvent, P-D-680, is toxic and flammable. Always wear protective
goggles and gloves, and use only In a well-ventilated area. Avoid contact with skin,
eyes, and clothes, and DO NOT breathe vapors. DO NOT use near open flame or
excessive heat. The solvents flash point is 100°F-138°F (38°C-59°C). If you
become dizzy while using cleaning solvent, immediately get fresh air and medical
help. If solvent contacts eyes, immediately wash your eyes and get medical aid.

Inspect all parts for damage. Replace any
damaged parts.
3.
Inspect brakeshoe surfaces for cracks, distortion,
and excessive wear. Brakeshoe linings should
have a minimum thickness of 1/32 in. (0.79 mm)
above rivet heads. Replace brakeshoes if brake-
shoe lining thickness is less than J-& in. (0.79 mm)
above rivet heads.
4.
Measure inside diameter of two bushings (28) in
brakeshoes (12 and 23). Remove bushing and
discard if inside diameter exceeds 1 l~p in.
(3.6 cm).
