TM 5-4320-308-13 Table 4-1.  Forward Intermediate Troubleshooting MALFUNCTION TEST OR INSPECTION CORRECTIVE ACTION 1. ENGINE CRANKS BUT FAILS TO START Step 1. Check for loose cylinder head. If loose, tighten nuts. Step 2. Check for faulty lift pump. Repair lift pump (para 4-13). Step 3. Check for faulty injector.  Remove and test injector (para 4-14). Repair or replace faulty injector (para 4-14). 2. ENGINE STARTS BUT RUNS UNEVENLY, STALLS, OR SURGES Step 1. Check for faulty injector.  Remove and test injector (para 4-14). Repair or replace faulty injector (para 4-14). Step 2. Check for air in the fuel system. Service injector (para 4-14). 3. ENGINE STOPS RUNNING OR PRODUCES BLACK, WHITE, OR GREY SMOKE Step 1. Check for faulty injector.  Remove and test injector (para 4-14). Repair or replace faulty injector (para 4-14). Step 2. Check for faulty lift pump. Repair lift pump (para 4-13). 4. ENGINE CONSUMES EXCESSIVE LUBE OIL Step 1. Check for oil leaks on bottom of engine. Tighten screws on cover located on bottom of engine. 4-2
