SYMPTOM
REASON
Overrunning clutch drive
Damaged bearings, poor connections, dirty or damaged commutator,
rotates slowly
damaged leads.
Overrunning clutch drive
Frozen bearings, poor contact between brushes and commutator,
does not rotate
field terminal shorted out to starter frame.
DISASSEMBLY:

Remove screw (1) and clamping saddle (2).

Remove nuts (3) and lockwashers (4).

Remove wire (5) (solenoid switch to excitation winding) from solenoid switch (6).

Remove screws (7).

Remove solenoid switch (6).

Remove screws (8).

Remove closure cap (9).

Remove seal ring (10), locking washer (11), and shims (12 and 13).

Remove nuts (14) and washers (15).

Remove commutator end shield (16).

Remove brush holder (17) and compression springs (18).

Remove nuts (19) and screws (20).

Remove carbon brushes (21) from brush holder (17).

If necessary, remove bushing (22) from commutator end shield (16).

Remove excitation winding (23) and studs (25).

Remove nut (26), screw (27), and spring washer (28).

Remove fork lever (29).

Remove armature (24), intermediate bearing (30), overrunning clutch drive (32), retainer (33), stop ring (34), and
bushings (35) as an assembly.
