(3) Move the voltmeter probe from the positive battery terminal to the positive output terminal of the
alternator. It must be the same as the voltage to the positive battery terminal. If it is not, check for loose cable
connections or damaged cables.
(4) Move the voltmeter probe from the positive terminal to the regulator terminal of the alternator. The
voltmeter must register zero voltage. If it registers a voltage higher than zero, it indicates a shorted isolation diode in the
alternator, or possibly an output cable terminal touching the heat sink. If more than zero is still registered after the output
cable is repositioned, replace the alternator.
