D - Depot maintenance
The m a i n t e n a n c e functions are defined as follows:
A - INSPECT. T o determine serviceability of an item by comparing
i t s physical , mechanical, a n d electrical characteristics with
e s t a b l i s h e d standards.
B - TEST . T o verify serviceability and to detect electrical or
m e c h a n i c a l failure by use of test equipment.

SERVICE. T o clean, to preserve, to charge, to paint, and to
a d d fuel, l u b r i c a n t s , c o o l i n g agents, and air.
D - ADJUST . T o rectify to the extent necessary to bring into proper
o p e r a t i n g range.
E - ALIGN. T o adjust specified variable elements of an item to
bring to optimum performance.
F - CALIBRATE. To determine the corrections to be made in the
r e a d i n g s of instruments or test equipment used in precise
measurement. Consists of the comparisons of two instruments,
o n e of which is a certified standard of known accuracy, to
d e t e c t and adjust any discrepancy in the accuracy of the
i n s t r u m e n t being compared with the certified standard.

H - REPLACE. T o replace unserviceable items with serviceable
a s s e m b l i e s , subassemblies, or parts.
I - REPAIR. T o restore an item to serviceable condition. This
i n c l u d e s , but is not limited to, i n s p e c t i o n , cleaning, preserving,
a d j u s t i n g , replacing, welding, r i v e t i n g , and strengthening.
J - OVERHAUL. T o restore an item to a completely serviceable
c o n d i t i o n as prescribed by maintenance serviceability standards
using the Inspect and Repair Only as Necessary (I ROAN) technique,
K - REBUILD. T o restore an item to a standard as nearly as possible
t o original or new condition in appearance, performance, and life
e x p e c t a n c y . This is accomplished through complete disassembly of
the item, i n s p e c t i o n of alI parts or components, repair or re-
p l a c e m e n t of worn or unserviceable elements (items) using original
m a n u f a c t u r i n g tolerances and specifications, and subsequent re-
a s s e m b l y of the item.
