REPLACE/REPAIR CRANKSHAFT ASSEMBLY (Continued)
CLEANING AFTER REPAIR
WARNING
Death or serious injury could occur if diesel fuel oil is not handled carefully. Use in a well-
ventilated area away from open flame, arcing equipment, ignition sources, heaters, or excessive
heat. Always store fuel in proper, marked containers. DO NOT SMOKE.
Death or serious injury could occur if compressed air is directed against the skin. Do not use
compressed air for cleaning or drying unless the pressure is/has been reduced to 30 psi (2.11
kgcm2) or less. When working with compressed air always use chip guards, eye protection, and
other personal protective equipment.
Live steam used for cleaning shall not exceed 100 psi (690 kPa). Use goggles or face shield for
eye protection. Do not direct live steam against skin.
Clean crankshaft and oil passages with diesel fuel oil and dry with compressed air.
NOTE
If a new crankshaft is to be installed, steam-clean it to remove the rust preventive. Blow through
oil passages with compressed air.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION
Equipment damage could occur if bearing caps or bearings are not returned to their original
positions. Follow matchmarks made during disassembly.
NOTE
When a new or reground crankshaft is installed, ALL new main and center bearings and bearing shells
(upper and lower) must also be installed.
1
Passing a 3/4 inch (19.05 mm) rope or a fabric lifting sling through cylinder bores 1 and 6, secure the crankshaft
in approximate position for installation of bearings and bearing caps.
